The story of Lameshur Cottages begins in 2002, when local legend David Grey conceived and constructed the site’s buildings and layout.
Nestled in a hillside valley, the location offers natural protection from severe wind. However, the true test of this came in September 2017 with Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Grey had built the site using the most stringent new-standard hurricane codes; while structures across the islands were devastated, the cottages here were among the few that survived.
The Original Vision and Legacy of the Land
It is surrounded by the Virgin Islands National Park, a gorgeous, protected area created in 1956 from Laurance Rockefeller's generous donation of three-quarters of St. John to the National Park Service.
The property's unique location is a key element of its appeal, lying within one of the small, privately owned pockets not included in the donation. This ensures there will never be new development nearby, preserving the pristine views and tranquil, secluded setting for generations to come.
The first owner, Judy, had originally hired David Grey for the build. A dedicated host, she was deeply involved in local animal rescue and utilized the adjacent lot as a corral for sick and injured donkeys brought to her by park rangers.
Continued Stewardship and Enhancements
The next chapter began when Russ and Liz purchased the site in 2009. Repeat visitors since 1986, they had discovered it while exploring St. John.
Russ and Liz committed themselves to enhancing the guest experience, upgrading the buildings, and installing a second cistern, significantly increasing the onsite water supply. After years of dedication, Russ and Liz moved off-island in 2021, handing the property and privilege over to the Hall family.
